Robbers kill, snatch about K80,000 from Chipata business man

ARMED robbers have shot dead one person and stabbed two people before snatching about K80, 000 at Chipata’s Kapata Market. Eastern Province police commissioner Luckson Sakala said five robbers attacked Mr Phone’s shop around 20:00 hours on Wednesday.

“I would like to confirm that last night (Wednesday) around 20:00 hours, Chipata Central police station received a report of aggravated robbery and murder, which occurred at Kapata Market at a shop called Mr Phone. Five armed robbers with suspected AK 47 rifle attacked the owner of the shop in the process two of his shop workers were stabbed with a knife and the third person was shot in the chest. This person who was shot died on the way to Chipata Central Hospital where he was rushed for urgent treatment,” he said.

“One of the two who were stabbed with a knife is still in Chipata Central Hospital, [the other one] was attended to and discharged yester night (Wednesday night). It is believed that the armed robbers were driving an unregistered silver Toyota Corolla. Immediately after the robbery, they rushed to the Toyota Corolla and drove off heading into town. Investigations have actually been launched. I would like to appeal to members of the public, those that would have information leading to the arrest of these robbers, let them report to any nearest police station.”

Sakala said the total amount which was stolen was not known but the owner told the police that it was not less than K80,000. He named those who were stabbed with a knife as Daniel Jere 23, of Sido compound, and Joseph Daka 29 of Umodzi compound.

Sakala named the deceased as Daniel Phiri of Mthilasembe compound who is also a businessman and went to Mr Phone’s shop to look for change when the incident occurred.
