ORLANDO Pirates’ Austin Muwowo, Red Arrows’ Bruce Musakanya and Kaizer Chiefs’ Lazarous Kambole are competing for this year’s MTN FAZ Transitional League Footballer of the Year award.
During a press briefing at Football House yesterday the MTN/FAZ Awards Committee chairperson Rix Mweemba announced that the 2019 MTN FAZ Transitional League will reach its climax on July 31 at a Gala Awards event in Lusaka.
He said public voting for the Footballer of the Year had started.
Mweemba, the Football Association of Zambia vice-president, announced this year’s categories as Footballer of the Year, Coach of The Year, Top Scorer of the Year, Most Disciplined of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Best and Best Assistant Referee, Best XI and the FAZ President’s Award.
The Awards committee received nominations from the 20 clubs that participated in the 2019 FAZ/MTN Transitional League.
MTN/FAZ Awards Committee member Matimba Nkonje explained the criteria for nominations for each category and advised that the Young Player of the Year covered players aged under 23 years – who had been active during the transitional league.
Nominations were submitted from the coach and captain of the clubs and they were tasked to look at discipline, games featured in, and contributions to the team during the season.
The gala dinner event promises to showcase the best of Zambia’s Super Division and award outstanding contributions to the 2019 FAZ MTN Transitional League.
With the successful implementation of the transitional league, the Zambian football calendar is now aligned to the CAF and FIFA calendar to run from August to May.

MTN Zambia events manager Mwamba Chasaya Siame announced the three top nominees for the 2019 MTN FAZ Transitional League Footballer of the Year award, Muwowo, Musakanya and Kambole.
MTN Zambia, as the league sponsor, have invested US$1.5 million in the Super Division in the past season.

MTN has opened voting for the Footballer of the Year. Subscribers can make their selection by dialing *333# and selecting either 1 for Muwowo, 2 for Musakanya or 3 for Kambole.
Kambole played for Zambia in the recent COSAFA Cup, and has an impressive seven international goals to his name in 15 matches, according to the national-football-teams.com website.
Chiefs fans may catch a glimpse of Kambole for the first time in the Carling Cup against Orlando Pirates, which takes place on 28 July at the FNB Stadium.
Muwowo was on loan at Forest Rangers last season where he went on to become one of the top performers in the Zambian Premier League, having registered 10 goals and 8 assists for the side managed by former Buccaneer Perry Mutapa.
In that season Muwowo, finished the season as the league’s joint-top goal scorer with his Rangers teammate Zikiru Adams and Napsa Stars striker Laudit Mavugo.
The 22-year-old player’s impressive displays in the Super League earned him a place in the Zambia squad which participated in the 2019 COSAFA Cup in Durban.
Muwowo helped Chipolopolo win the regional tournament as they defeated Botswana’s Zebras in the final.
The former Forest Rangers attacker becomes Pirates’ ninth signing as they prepare for the new season.
