ENERGY minister Mathews Nkhuwa says energy mix plays a pivotal role in driving an economy.
He said government has removed VAT on energy generators to make them affordable to the ordinary citizen and encourage continuity of business operation during the loadsheding period.
In the speech read on his behalf by principal energy officer Anna Banda during the launch of Weichai generator by Camco Equipment Zambia Limited in Lusaka, Nkhuwa said a diversified energy mix in an economy minimises the inherent risks of relying on one form of energy.
He said government was working on modalities of encouraging private sector participation in the different source of energy generation in order to spur economic development in the country.
“In order to enhance access to generator sets and ensure that they are affordable to a large section of our citizen, my government has put in place various incentives that include removal if VAT on acquiring generator sets. This policy decision by government is intended to encourage users of electricity to acquire generator sets at an affordable price thereby providing continuity in business operation during the time of loadsheding,” Nkhuwa said.
He encouraged Camco Equipment Zambia Limited to expand in all the 10 provinces of Zambia in order to make accessible the low noise generators and other agricultural machinery to all Zambians.
“The introduction of Weichai generator sets on the product range of Camco Equipment Zambia Limited is a commendable initiative that will in more than one way add value to commerce and industry I our country as the generator sets El guarantee continuity in business operations,” said Nkhuwa.
“It is also gratifying to learn that Camco is working with financial institutions to enable a wide array of end users to access these techniques.”
Camco Equipment Zambia Limited chairman Li Tie said the company was committed to link Zambian energy landscape to global brands that would benefit production industries in the country.
He said Weichai generator sets were internationally credited and comes with unmatched technical support on maintenance and spares.
“The Weichai generator varies in power capacity from 15KVA to 825KVA and will not only cater for heavy industrial clientele but also for domestic use. These energy solutions are aimed at ensuring that the wheels of industry continue to turn during loadshedding periods constrained by dwindling water levels in many of the water bodies,” said Li.

Camco director marketing Bernad Chiwala said the introduction of Weichai generators designed and engineered to meet Zambian power demands was an important milestone.
