COSAFA CUP COMING HOME – MWAMBA

SHEPOLOPOLO today play an historic COSAFA championship final against hosts Banyana Banyana.

Meanwhile, the Under 20 Women’s National Team will also be vying for the junior trophy when they take on Tanzania at the tournament also being staged in South Africa.

The Shepolopolo stormed the final after an impressive run in the qualification rounds where they thrashed Mauritius 15-0 before edging Namibia 3-2 and in the semi-final they whitewashed Botswana 4-0.

And the junior Shepolopolo had a clean sweep climbing the ladder to the final having won all their group stage games beating eSwatini 4-0, Botswana 4-1 and Tanzania 2-1.

Shepolopolo coach Beauty Mwamba said the tournament has been a tough one.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey but the girls put in their best and all is well and we are ready for the final. We really wanted to get to the final. We wanted to be part of the history makers and change everything,” Mwamba said.

“It is all about determination. But the encounter is a 50/50, it can go either way… their record does not intimidate us because it’s not their record that will be playing on the pitch…Remain focused and do all they can to lift the trophy and take it to Zambia.”

Shepolopolo captain Hazel Nali has hinted that only if they work hard will they carry the day and make the historic win.

“What made us go through to the final is experience. Like for me, I have been with the team since 2014 and we made some changes to help us get to the final. This qualification to the final is a great achievement and important because it is the first time. We are now looking forward to getting the cup, we really need to make history by winning this last game,” Nali said
“South Africa is a tough opponent. We really need to work hard to beat them but in football, whoever needs the win the most wins and we know the task ahead.”

To get to the finals, South Africa butchered Comoros 17-0 in the group stage match and eliminated last year’s runners up Zimbabwe in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Tanzania has once been beaten at the same tournament by the Young Shepolopolo and they will go into the encounter blazing not wanting to lose twice against the same team.

The early kick off is at 10:00 hours for the U-20 challenge at Wolfson Stadium while the senior teams’ COSAFA final kicks off at 14:00 hours at the same venue with the prize giving ceremony at the close of the games.
