Police detain Zimba officer over ivory possession

A SENIOR police officer in-charge of Zimba district and three others have been arrested by the Department of Wildlife for being in possession of ivory.

According to sources, the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) is being detained at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport (HMNIA) police station.

“One of our senior officers Inspector [Samuel] Mulekwa who is the OIC for Zimba was arrested by wildlife officers on Tuesday after being found with ivory and is in police custody at the airport. He is allegedly the mastermind of the ivory saga while the others have been detained at Livingstone Central Police Station and Dambwa Central,” a police officer who is not authorised to give media interviews said.
When contacted, Department of Wildlife Livingstone senior warden Lewis Daka said he was in Lusaka but was aware of the arrests.
“I am in Lusaka and I don’t have the details, but let me first talk to my boss,” said Daka./LM
