RENOWNED US dance company, Step Afrika! will next month tour Zambia.
The US Embassy, in collaboration with Umodzi Arts Organisation, has announced the tour of Step Afrika! from September 9-14, as part of the U.S. Department of State’s “Arts Envoy” programme.
According to a statement from Embassy, Step Afrika! ranks among the top dance companies in the United States.
It stated that the dynamic African-American dance troupe, whose performances combine step, hip-hop, ballet, and traditional African dance, will demonstrate the close connections between Africa and the United States in a series of performances and workshops in Kabwe and Lusaka.
“The Zambian public will have the opportunity to attend performances at Makululu Grounds in Kabwe on September 11, and at the Government Complex in Lusaka on September 14,” it stated.
It stated that Step Afrika!’s tour will serve the immediate goal of contributing to Zambia’s march towards epidemic control of HIV by 2020.
It stated that in dance, the concept of “stepping” highlights pride and unity. This concept will be the focus of the programme, encouraging young people to take a unified step towards an AIDS-free Zambia.
Each year, the US Embassy organises cultural exchange programmes to build capacity and strengthen bilateral relations.
The Arts Envoy programme promotes an improved understanding of US social, political, and economic perspectives, and enhances awareness of US culture and society.
As cultural ambassadors, Step Afrika! will also conduct workshops, masterclasses, and community outreach activities while its members learn from and share with Zambians.
