Mealie meal in L/stone hits K160

THE cost of mealie meal in Livingstone has hit K160, which is K10 more than it was last week.

However, a survey by The Mast revealed that the commodity price at Shoprite’s main business trading centre for a 25 kilogramme bag of National Milling breakfast was pegged at K144.99 as at 19:00 hours on Tuesday while barely 300 metres away Spar Supermarket had the same commodity brand at K159:90.

Roller meal was at K114.99 at Shoprite while at Spar it was K134.50.

As for a 10 kilogramme bag of breakfast meal, the National Milling brand cost in the second class area of the main business trading area was at K75 while in townships at makeshift stalls known as tuntemba had 10 Kg bags of Zimbabwean meal at K55.

A Livingstone resident described the cost of the staple food as a greatest insult ever experienced since the UNIP era.

“Ifi fyabupuba (this is foolishness). Next we will have the UNIP type of mealie meal coupons. We need to watch out,” an elderly woman commented amid shouts of agreement from other shoppers at Shoprite.
