U17 in Malawi for COSAFA tourney

WE are proud of you and urge you to enjoy yourselves and come back with the cup, says FAZ deputy general secretary Joseph Chimpampwe has told the Under 17 boys.

Coach Osward Mutapa and his charges are heading to Blantyre, Malawi to participate in the COSAFA Under 17 Boys Championship to run from October 11 to 20, 2019.

Chimpampwe was at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport yesterday to see off the team.

“On behalf of the Football Association of Zambia Executive Committee, I wish you well. We are proud of you and urge you to enjoy yourselves and come back with the cup,” he said.

Chimpampwe advised the squad to remain focused but equally enjoy their participation at the tournament.

Teams participating in the 2019 COSAFA Men’s Under-17 Championship to be staged in Blantyre have started arriving ahead of the tournament’s kick-off tomorrow.

FAZ said Comoros, who are taking part for the first time, were the first team to arrive via Chileka International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, while Lesotho and Angola were expected through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe yesterday.

It stated that Mozambique travelling by road from Tete were expected to arrive yesterday through Mwanza boarder.

FAZ stated that South Africa will come in two groups through Chileka with the first one arriving yesterday and the other today.

Eswatini are also expected today.

FAZ stated that the referees for the tournament arrived on Saturday and have since Sunday, been attending a pre-tournament referees’ course which ends on Thursday.

COSAFA deputy general secretary and competition manager Suzgo Nyirenda, who is a former Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary, will lead the COSAFA team in inspecting all facilities ahead of the event.

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said all was set for the country to host the tournament.

“On behalf of the LOC chairman, I would like to say that we are excited to host the tournament, and everything is in place and we can’t wait for the games to start,” said Zakazaka.

Malawi are in Group A together with South Africa, Zambia and eSwatini while Group B has Lesotho, Comoros, Angola and Mozambique.

Lesotho will face Comoros in the tournament’s opening fixture at the Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe on Friday, before Angola takes on Mozambique later in the afternoon.

The opening ceremony is on Saturday.

eSwatini play Zambia in a Group B opener at 11:00 hrs before Malawi face South Africa at 14:00 hrs.
