ZAMBIA U-17 national team coach Oswald Mutapa says good preparations are the reason his side has reached the 2019 COSAFA tournament in emphatic style.
The junior Chipolopolo yesterday confirmed their place in the regional tournament currently going on in Malawi after thumping South Africa 7-0 at Mpira Stadium.
The exciting young boys earlier beat Eswatini 6-0 in the opening game at the same venue on Saturday to score a total of 13 unanswered goals in two matches going into the final group game against the hosts tomorrow.
Both Malawi and Zambia have qualified to the last four and would only be playing for group A supremacy.
“It was a great game, we got maximum points. We stuck to the game plan, we knew South Africa’s ability to move the ball. They are technically very good. We denied them space, on two occasions they were able to move the ball but we scored early. Great result at the end. We did our selection in May, we have been camping weekly every month. If we want results, we have to prepare adequately,” said Mutapa who hinted at making changes to the team that plays Malawi.
His counterpart Vela Khumalo blamed lack of preparations for his team for the loss.
“I am not happy with the score line. Any coach will not be happy. Congrats to Zambia, they had a game plan they are a running team. What killed us was conceding a goal early in the match. It’s a learning curve for us. Our boys are small and we are preparing for next year, we will have a better team now they know what a tournament is. We met a well prepared team. They have been in camp since May- that’s a long time to prepare. We only assembled,” said Khumalo whose side lost the opening match 3-0 to Malawi.
