U23 to camp in Spain

THE Zambia U-23 national team will camp in Spain before flying to Egypt for the CAF U-23 AfCON next month.

The Beston Chambeshi-drilled side will next week leave for Kenya where they will play a friendly match with that country’s U-23 before flying to Spain for a week-long camp, according to a tentative programme that FAZ submitted to the government immediately the team qualified to the tournament and seen by The Mast.

In 2017, the same crop of players, then U-20, camped in Spain prior to winning the AfCON that Zambia hosted.
They returned to Spain before heading to the FIFA U-20 World Cup where they reached the quarter finals the same year.

And according to sources, the government is this week expected to release funding for the trip.

“They promised this week because the team has to leave for Kenya, play a friendly on the way then go Spain for a week before finally going to Egypt for the tournament. We got feedback from the ministry that they will release money this week because this is now a national programme. We just hope that works because we need the team to be fully focused and prepare adequately,” said the source.

The tournament in Egypt will be used as qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where the final three teams will qualify to the Olympics.
