SEAN Tembo says Zambians would be justified to conclude that President Edgar Lungu’s numerous directives to his energy minister to import electricity have been nothing but public relations stunts meant to create a false public impression that he is doing something about the load-shedding when in fact not.
Tembo, who is the president of the opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP), said his party had noted with extreme disappointment the continued failure by the PF government to resolve the power deficit whish had reached crisis proportions.
“As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) we are extremely disappointed with the continued failure by the PF Government to resolve the power deficit problem which has now reached crisis proportions. Ever since this problem arose, President Lungu has directed the Energy Minister to import power on several occasions but no power has been imported to date. Therefore, the citizens of this Republic would be justified to conclude that President Lungu’s numerous directives to his Energy Minister to import electricity have been nothing but public relations stunts meant to create a false public impression that President Lungu is doing something about the load-shedding problem when in fact not,” Tembo said.
Tembo further noted that regardless of President Lungu’s directive that all hospitals across the country should not be load-shedded, they have continued to be victims of the problem.
He noted that at Kaoma Hospital relatives of the deceased were advised to bury their loved ones within 24 hours to avoid decomposition.
He feared that with the non-availability of electricity, most people in cities were deprived of clean water.
“As Patriots for Economic Progress, we are aware that the water system in most urban parts of the country depend on electricity. Therefore, this continued load-shedding means that most people in cities such as Lusaka do not have access to water as well. This is a clear public health disaster in waiting and it is just a matter of time before we witness a cholera outbreak. It is beyond debate that every time we have a cholera outbreak, it results in the unnecessary loss of hundreds of innocent lives,” Tembo said.
Tembo said President Lungu’s continued incompetence and failure to address the power deficit problem had so far cost the economy huge sums and it was only a matter of time before it costs the lives of innocent citizens through a potential cholera outbreak.
He added that Zambians expect President Lungu to take his job as Republican President seriously.
Tembo further said so far, the President’s actions and directives with regard to the electricity deficit had been nothing but a joke, and Zambians do not want a joker as leader, especially during crisis times.
He added that no one was interested in the so-called Energy Policy or Electricity Bill that President Lungu’s cabinet drafted.
Tembo said citizens were only interested in seeing the imported electricity arrive.
“On behalf of the Zambian people, we wish to inform President Lungu that no one is interested in his empty directives to the Energy Minister. The citizens are only interested in seeing the imported electricity arrive here and the subsequent expected reduced load-shedding hours. That is the only thing that citizens are interested in. Therefore, President Lungu is strongly advised to keep his public relations stunts of issuing empty directives to himself because they are irritating the citizenry,” said Tembo.
