FORMER World Boxing Council (WBC) women champion Catherine Phiri will take on Mexican Yamileth Mercado for the WBC Super Bantamweight gold title in the next 90 days.
This comes after Mercado of Mexico convincingly beat champion Fatima Zarika of Kenya on Saturday night after the judges scored the fight 99-91, 98-92, 99-91.
Catherine said she was ready for any of the boxers but she had wanted to face Zarika for the fight.
“I was ready for any of the two boxers, but I really wanted Zarika for the fight but all in all I’m ready for the fight and am starting to train according to how Mercado fights,” she said.
“I would love to have the fight in Zambia but if it won’t work out I’m ready to fight away because I have done that before and I am well prepared for the fight.”
Oriental Queries Boxing Promotions manager Christopher Malunga, who is Phiri’s manager, said the promotion would sit down with the sponsors and see how they can stage the fight in Zambia.
“We are going to sit with our sponsors and stakeholders so that we put the interests of our fans, the interest of our sponsors and of course the interest of our country first during our negotiations so that at least we come up with a very good bid to stage the fight in Zambia or we get prepared with whatever comes up,” said Malunga.
