Chanje calls for thorough probe into death of his subject in a Malawian national park

CHIEF Chanje of the Chewa people in Chipangali district has called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the death of his subject in Malawi’s Kasungu National Park.

Commenting on the death of Lewis Mbewe in Kasungu National Park where he had gone hunting, Chanje said the death was unfortunate.

He said Mbewe’s death raises a lot of questions, especially to the family.

Chanje said Mbewe was found dead naked in a different location from where he was resting on the fateful day.

“My appeal to both the police and government is that they should carry out thorough investigations to put to rest a number of concerns from family members. Such deaths bring a lot doubts among some family members,” he said.

“The issue is that the deceased went with his colleagues but they didn’t come back together. The other strange thing to the family is that when game scouts kill a person, sometimes they just leave that person but how come this person was found naked at a different place from where he rested on the fateful day?”

Eastern Province police commissioner Luckson Sakala confirmed Mbewe’s death whose body was recovered in a decomposed state, and riddled with gunshot wounds.
Two Zambians who were with Mbewe have since been apprehended by police to help with investigations.
