THE Zambia U20 national soccer team will today lock horns with free scoring Angola in the semifinals of the ongoing COSAFA tournament being hosted by Zambia.
Zambia sealed their place in the semifinals of the 2019 COSAFA men’s Under-20 Championship following a nervy 2-1 victory over Malawi in their final Group A clash at a wet Nkoloma Stadium on Monday.
The young Chipolopolo boys, who last claimed the title in 2016, finished top of their pool with a full haul of nine points but were made to sweat by the Young Flames.
Malawi finished second but bowed out as they cannot be among the best runners-up with only four points from their three matches.
Zambia took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from captain Golden Mafwenta and the prolific Francisco Mwepu, who netted his third goal of the competition.
Mutapa, however, predicts a tough encounter ahead of the boys today.
“It will be a tough game facing a team that has only allowed a goal and scored more than 10 goals in three games. It shows how the team is very serious in the tournament. We have to account ourselves so well and counter their strength,” he said.
Mutapa said it is an important game of the tournament and he looks forward to progress to the finals.
“It is an important game for the tournament to us looking at where we ended in the last tournament we hosted. It was in the semifinals. So tomorrow (today) for us to be in the finals, we need to be a very determined side for us to go a step from last year’s tournament,” Mutapa said.
South Africa and Madagascar will meet again in the first of the semifinals on Thursday, with Zambia and Angola to contest the other last four fixture.
