PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says he wants US Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote to leave the country after he criticised the High Court’s sentencing of a gay couple to 15 years imprisonment for having a consensual relationship.
But human rights activist Laura Miti is wondering when President Lungu is recalling Zambia’s envoy to Washington Ngosa Simbyakula before he is contaminated with ‘gay’ issues.
“We have complained officially to the American government, and we are waiting for their response because we don’t want such people in our midst,” President Lungu said on Sunday during a church service in Choma. “We want him gone.”
Ambassador Foote said he was “personally horrified” after the high court sentenced the two men and called on the government to reconsider some “outdated” laws that punish minority groups.
Reacting to President Lungu’s comments and reasoning, Miti in a tweet wrote: “When are you withdrawing Ambassador Simbyakula from an America that supports gay rights. Surely we cannot have our Christian Ambassador in a sinful country like that? He is being contaminated.”
