WITH the national cross country slated for this weekend in Kabwe, Victor Chewe of Zambia Police athletics club will be among athletes from different parts of the country hoping to scoop the top prize.

National cross country might be his first competition of the year 2020 but is definitely not his main target for the year.

With a number of international marathons in the calendar year, the Soweto Marathon in South Africa is the event Chewe is looking to take part in and win a medal for the country.

He said the Soweto marathon is one of the events he would have loved to take part in and win something for the country.

“I have been running since 2016 and I am currently preparing for the national cross country coming this weekend in Kabwe at the golf club,” he said.

“In 2020 I am looking forward to do my best especially that this year we have a lot of competitions. I really want to go and compete in the Soweto Marathon later this year in South Africa. Then again I’m preparing for the Vic Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe then next month we have the Namibia marathon. I am putting so much effort. I’m training very hard to achieve this and training three times a day from Monday to Friday. I really want to do more than what I have achieved.”

The 22-year-old, who wants to be a world champion, might not achieve his dream as he is facing sponsorship challenges.

“The first challenge is sponsorship. I don’t have much sponsorship, so if there are people who want to help me, I will be glad because this will help me in preparing for competitions,” he said.

Chewe, who has represented Zambia at several international competitions with his latest in 2016 when Zambia hosted the Southern African Youth championship in Lusaka, won two bronze medals in the 10,000 and 5,000 metres respectively.

The same year Chewe represented Zambia in Angola during the Region Five games and won a silver medal in the 10,000 metres.

He has also won several local completions in the last two years that includes the Lafarge Marathon and the Inter Company Relay.
