PREPARATIONS for this year’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have reached its climax as athletes have intensified their trainings towards the qualification to the tournament.

Boxers in the name of Steven Zimba, Evaristo Mulenga and Patrick Chinyemba are the country’s only hopes to qualify for the showpiece.

On Saturday afternoon the three boxers took to the ring with their Malawian counterparts who have been in the country for a one-week training ahead the Senegal tournament slated for next month.

The Senegal tournament is the qualification stage to the Olympic Games. The three boxers outclassed the Malawian boxers through unanimous points.

And Zambia Boxing Federation vice-president Dan Chiteule said the friendly tournament will help Zambian boxers to prepare well for Senegal.

“This tournament is very important in the sense that we had visitors from Malawi who came to train with our boxers ahead of the Dakar tournament in Senegal next month which is an Olympic qualifier,” he said. “We have very high expectations from the three boxers because they have been in camp for a long time so it’s important for them because it’s one of the crucial preparatory fights (friendly) after this they will continue camping till they leave for the tournament.”

He has however urged the boxers to be very serious in their preparations for the qualifiers.
“They should be very serious and take this opportunity with both hands because we need representation at the Olympics sometime in July, so this is very serious,” said Chiteule.

“We are so grateful to government for the continued support and also grateful to the Malawi boxing club to come here and help our boxers with preparations.”
