RONALD ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba is Nkana, his blood is Nkana and he cannot go because the club treasures him, declared Nkana FC president Everisto Kabila after meeting the wantaway striker.
Kampamba last week indicated that he would not renew his contract once it expires next year as he felt unappreciated by the club. He however did not specify how he was unappreciated.
Kampamba is the longest serving member of the current Nkana side and has won two golden boots, a league title as well as the Barclays Cup (now ABSA Cup). The club also reached the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals in 2014 and 2019.
In an interview, Kabila who met Kampamba in the company of club technical chairman Davies Mwaba said the player and the club had come to an understanding on the perceived differences.
“We sat with the player because we wanted to hear why he came out like that. You know Sate is a very disciplined player, so we wanted to appreciate the reasons he came out like that and he told us [and] we listened. At the end of the day, it’s an internal matter that will be handled between management, the technical bench and the player,” Kabila said.
“But all in all, we gave him our position, which he understood. Sate is Nkana, he is a brand carrier and you don’t let such go. Where else will our Sate be more appreciated? So he will stay but of course there are other aspects of the game that we discussed that we can’t divulge to the public. But we listened to the player, he listened to us, he is our player and you will see him going forward.”
Asked what happens if the player insists on leaving next year, Kabila said: “we will see about that if that time comes.”
He indicated that contract extension negotiations will commence at an appropriate time.
