CHIPATA Diocese Bishop George Lungu says him and the newly appointed Ndola Diocese Bishop Benjamin Phiri did the best to be at the service of the local Church.
In his farewell message when he announced Bishop Phiri’s appointment to Ndola, Bishop Lungu said he worked with the immediate past Chipata Diocese Auxiliary bishop for nine years.
“I am happy to announce to you that right now at 12:00 hours (Friday) the Holy Father has announced the appointment of the new Bishop for Ndola Diocese to shepherd the sheep in that Diocese,” he said. “And the Nuncio has instructed me to announce to you, before all others in the Diocese that our very own Auxiliary Bishop Right Reverend Benjamin Phiri is now the Bishop of Ndola. Once again my Lord Bishop in absentia, we are very grateful to God for your services to this Diocese for the past nine years.”
Bishop Lungu said him and Bishop Phiri did a lot of things together.
“You and I tried within our human limitations to be at the service of the local Church here in Chipata. We tried to do things together and indeed my work was made easier as they say two hands are better than one. Now that the Lord is asking you to be a missionary Bishop to the Copperbelt, I am very sure the ministry there will be a fruitful one,” he said.
Bishop Lungu commended Bishop Phiri for his good work in the Diocese.
“Rest assured for our continued love and prayer for your ministry. Once again on behalf of the laity and clergy, we say, hearty congratulations,” he said.
Bishop Lungu has since elevated the Diocesan Chancellor Fr Dennis Punthambuyo Phiri to the position of Vicar-General.
