THE United Progressive Party has urged the public to strictly observe health guidelines put in place by the Ministry of Health to prevent the number of cases of COVID-19 in Zambia to swell to alarming levels.

Party president Saviour Chishimba has urged the opposition and the ruling party to work together in stamping out COVID-19 by putting their political differences aside to fight the pandemic, which was the common enemy.

He said COVID-19 was real and a deadly pandemic, which should be taken seriously by all Zambians regardless of their political affiliation or social standing.

Chishimba said COVID-19 was a war that had attacked Zambia and the entire planet, hence all citizens must be united by working together with the government through Ministry of Health and other line ministries to eradicate the virus.

He said this was not time for politicking because there was nothing important which could be compared to the precious life of a person.

He said COVID-19 had shaken the nation.

The opposition leader said although the country has continued recording high cases of infections and deaths, it was strange that some sections of society were still thinking that COVID-19 was a hoax.

He regretted the worrying situation on the ground where some people were relaxed by ignoring the stipulated rules by not wearing face masks in public places, using of alcohol hand sanitisers, practicing social distancing and washing of hands.

“I may have divergent views on the running of affairs of the country but COVID-19 is not only the single fight for the government; it is for everyone because it has affected all of us, so let us work in unison,” Chishimba said.

The opposition leader said that it was a pity that some business premises have stopped placing hand-washing basins at their entrances.

Chishimba warned that if people keep on ignoring stipulated health guidelines, it could result in a grave health disaster where cases of COVID-19 would skyrocket.

He also said it was sad that some bars and nightclub owners were defiling the presidential directives by opening their entities illegally.
