Lungu believes in rule of law, says Katele

PF presidential campaign team advisor Katele Kalumba says President Edgar Lungu believes in the rule of law.

And Eastern Province PF presidential campaign coordinator Vincent Mwale says if there is a person that Zambians can trust, it is President Lungu.

Featuring on Chipata TV on Tuesday night, Dr Kalumba said President Lungu has taken action even against his own ministers.

“First, President Edgar Lungu believes in the rule of law. That’s the critical piece that I know he has and when you try to use massage or mob psychology or whatever to use people, he always says ‘let the rule of law take its course’. He has taken action against some of his own ministers,” he said.

Dr Kalumba said the most important part of fighting corruption was by strengthening institutions like the police, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and others.

“The most important part of fighting corruption is to strengthen institutions such as the police and the investigations under the Anti-Corruption Commission, the capacity not to politicise – let the professional wings of the state do their job,” he said. “The President’s job is advocacy against corruption but the procedures of investigations and prosecution must be done through the proper channel of the law and the President supports that.”

Dr Kalumba said the PF government has performed well despite the challenges that the country was facing arising from COVID-19.

“The COVID-19 has created a lot of turbulences. Many narratives have developed as a result of the COVID-19. What the PF government has done is to first stabilise the situation by preventing the infections, by preventing deaths. This issue requires political commitment and leadership that the PF government has done,” he said.

Dr Kalumba said those that prevent Zambians from adhering to COVID-19 preventive guidelines were killing them.

“The PF as a ruling party is not doing anything they (opposition) cannot do. President Edgar Lungu has categorically stated that ‘we shall not hold mass rallies’ – it affects the PF party too. We have not seen mass rallies being addressed by President Lungu,” he said. “There is a lot of disinformation going especially [in] media. This is the time when we need to give our people facts. We are not disadvantaging anybody, they have the same means and the same capacity to do what we are doing.”

Dr Kalumba said it was not true that the PF had used COVID-19 to disadvantage the opposition from campaigning.

On violence, Dr Kalumba said President Lungu has shown that there was need for decency in politics.

“The facts are that we saw the rise of violence through what was called the Mapatizya formula that was promoted by our colleagues. That has escalated as militant as they have failed to access the seat of presidency. You expect it psychologically that when somebody fails so many times, they become desperate and they become more militarised in their language,” he said. “President Lungu has shown that we need decency by supporting the initiative of Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue which was formed to specifically support issues of co-existence between political parties.”

And Mwale said he was shocked with some allegations that were coming from opposition leaders.

“Yesterday, I heard on radio. I am very disappointed with one opposition leader who went to the extent of insinuating that we are giving vaccines only to PF cadres. Government has opened so many centres throughout the country even here in Chipata the vaccination centres are open to anyone,” he said. “How can even for the sake of politics one sink so low to tell such a lie?”

Mwale said President Lungu had provided leadership in the fight against COVID-19.

He also said the government had continued to promote crop diversification.

Mwale said for a long time in Zambia, people thought agriculture was just about growing maize.

“The PF government has been promoting crop diversification to levels where today even the government through Food Reserve Agency is buying soya beans because it is not just about maize now. Government is even promoting cassava and many other crops,” he said.

Mwale said the PF government had realised that there was so much that can be done to crops when there is value addition.

He said if there was a person that the people of Zambia could trust it is President Lungu because he had shown that he can work.

“What we know is that President Lungu can be trusted when he says things because he has performed. The President is talking about things that are practical, things that he is capable of doing,” Mwale said.

He said the PF government would continue fostering development because there was no finishing line to development.

Mwale said the government has ended load shedding by investing in power generation.

He said the government had created 46 districts across the country.
