UPND Alliance’s Kaumbwe parliamentary candidate dies

KAUMBWE Constituency UPND candidate in Petauke Bornface Khondowe is dead.

Khondowe died from Kitwe Central Hospital on Monday where he was hospitalised.

Eastern Province UPND chairperson Johabie Mtonga confirmed Khondowe’s death.

Mtonga said details of the funeral would be announced later.

UPND provincial information and publicity secretary Godfrey Mapili said Khondowe’s demise was a big loss to the party.

“Our candidate was unwell and he has died from Kitwe Central hospital. He has been there for almost a month. To us, as UPND, it is a very big loss to lose a strong candidate such as this one. As I speak, we are in the field with the chairman, so we are just planning to come back and attend to the funeral,” Mapili said.

Khondowe’s death comes barely three weeks three days after the death of another UPND parliamentary candidate for Kasenengwa Constituency Titus Miti.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia conducted fresh nominations in Kasenengwa on July 12, 2021 in accordance to the provisions of the law.

Fresh nominations will held in Kaumbwe according to Article 52 (6) of the constitution, which states that; Where a candidate dies, resigns or becomes disqualified in accordance with
Article 70, 100 or 153 or a court disqualifies a candidate for corruption or malpractice, after the close of nominations and before the election date, the Electoral Commission shall cancel the election and require the filing of fresh nominations by eligible candidates and elections shall be held within thirty days of the filing of the fresh nominations.
