COPPER Queens maiden appearance at the Olympics started on a humbling foot as they were massively beaten 10-3 by reigning European champions, the Netherlands at Miyaga stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
The Dutch ranked fourth, 100 rungs above Zambia, took advantage of the timid Copper Queens’ defence to score six goals in the first half.
The high scoring Dutch team, which beat Norway 6-0, Australia 7-0 and Belgium 5-0 in the build up to the Olympics, continued their attacking prowess with four more goals in the second half through Arsenal star Vivianne Miedema.
Miedema scored four, Martens Lieke with a hat trick, Rood Jill combined with substitute Berenstein Lineth to add their own.
Zambia had their own moments in the game and captain Barbra was not to be outshined as she claimed a hat trick.
And in all three goals, Banda over powered the Dutch defence with incredible footwork, pace and power.
Goalkeeper Hazel Nali who gave away the first goal also made some brilliant saves.
But the Zambia defence left much to be desired as they made elementary mistake after mistake.
Zambia will take on China in the next group F match on Saturday.
China lost the opening game to Brazil 5-0 at the same venue.
